Our Roots
Our strength lies in our actions. Since incorporating in July 2022, Nagweyaabiin Unity Centre has served as the grassroots heartbeat for the urban Indigenous community of Espanola. We are a volunteer-led non-profit dedicated to meeting our community where they are, creating safe, inclusive cultural spaces for our families, youth, and Elders to gather and connect.

We are dedicated to restoring culture and dignity. Through monthly socials, hand drumming, and youth support initiatives, we provide connection and resources in a respectful way. We ensure our community members have access to the tools, food security, and cultural support necessary to reach a brighter future together.
The Heart of the Hub
A Vital Gateway
Espanola serves as the central hub for eight First Nations communities and over 6,000 Indigenous individuals. For many, this town is the only access point for essential resources. Nagweyaabiin Unity Centre exists to ensure that the 500+ Indigenous residents living here, and the thousands who travel here, have a culturally safe place to belong. We are not just an organization; we are the urban home fire for our people.

From Planning to Presence
Since incorporating in July 2022, we have moved from aspirations to action. We are a volunteer-led non-profit dedicated to showing up for our community in meaningful ways. Whether it is gathering for hand drumming socials, hosting potlucks, or supporting local Espanola events, we are committed to being seen, heard, and accessible to our members.

Grassroots & Community-Led
We are proud to do what we can, right now. Operating as a mobile, grassroots organization, we meet our community where they are, utilizing shared spaces and partner venues to host our gatherings. We believe that building community doesn't require a permanent building; it requires consistent connection and the will to serve.

Our Focus: Youth & Seniors
Our mandate is to bridge the gap between reservation and urban life, with a specific focus on our Youth and Seniors. From creating safe environments for high school students to combatting isolation among our Elders, we are dedicated to upholding the dignity and well-being of our community through active, hands-on cultural support.

Community Impact
Powered by volunteers.
Driven by culture.
Gathering & Connection
We don't wait for a building to build community. We host monthly Drum Socials and Potlucks in shared community spaces, providing a consistent, culturally safe environment for our families to connect, share food, and combat isolation.

Youth Empowerment &
Future Vision
We believe in taking immediate action to remove barriers for our next generation. We have already mobilized to support urban Indigenous youth through initiatives like our Hockey Equipment Drive, which helped families keep their kids active and on the ice. But we are also building for tomorrow. We are actively pursuing grant funding to launch a High School Nutrition Initiative to ensure food security and cultural connection during the school day, with the long-term goal of establishing comprehensive youth programming aligned with the OFIFC framework.

Advocacy & Navigation
For the members of the eight surrounding First Nations who come to Espanola for essential services, we act as a bridge. We help our community navigate urban systems while maintaining their dignity and cultural identify.

How You Can Help. We are seeking partners and volunteers to help us expand our reach. Whether you can offer a venue for a social or volunteer your time to assist with our youth programs, your hands-on support is what helps us turn these initiatives into a permanent legacy for Espanola.
